Canada, Thailand defend coronavirus vaccine mix after World Health Organization suggests recall strategy is ‘chaotic’


Here are some significant developments:

  • Parts of South Africa’s immunization program have been temporarily halted following the country’s most violent protests in years. Only about 2.5% of the population of this covid-ravaged country has been fully immunized.
  • Tokyo city reported highest number of coronavirus cases on Wednesday in almost six months, just days before the Olympics and about a week after authorities declared a state of emergency to stem the rising tide of infections.
  • The global number of new coronavirus cases increased by 10 percent over the past week, after more than two months of steady decline, the WHO said in an epidemiological update. As the number of deaths linked to covid-19 increased by 3% globally, the agency said, the Africa region saw a 50% increase in new deaths from the virus.
  • The London Transport Authority will would continue to mandate face coverings on board services such as the city metro. England will lift virtually all remaining virus brakes on Monday.
  • Sydney extended its limited lockdown for at least 14 more days, after the state of New South Wales recorded 97 new cases on Wednesday. Australia’s largest city has been under tightened restrictions for about three weeks.
