Plans approved for second Tamworth Enterprise Center

Planning permission was granted to Tamworth Borough Council to develop a second business center in the mid 19e century section of the old Co-operative Society building at Colehill.

This development is part of Tamworth Borough Council’s plans to transform the heart of Tamworth town centre. The new corporate center will complement the already well-used and over-subscribed Tamworth corporate center at Philip Dix House in Corporation Street.

This redevelopment will provide affordable serviced offices, collaboration space, shared offices and meeting rooms in the heart of Tamworth town center within the existing store fronts and upper floors facing Colehill and Church Street of the former Co-operative Society building.

The new facility will include a variety of offices, including larger spaces for business growth, as well as offices suitable for start-ups.

The plans have been submitted by external planning consultants and all proposed changes are designed to retain, enhance and celebrate the Victorian features of the building.

Most of the works proposed are internal and do not require planning permission, but some minor external modifications are required to improve the appearance and functionality of the building.

Cllr Jeremy Oates, leader of Tamworth Borough Council, said: ‘This development is part of our ongoing plans to transform the heart of Tamworth town centre, through an overall regeneration investment of a significant £40m. in the city, which includes a grant of £21.6 million. from the Government High Streets Fund.

“Convert the middle of the 19e A century-old part of the old cooperative allows us to preserve and enhance this magnificent historic building. Our design aims to bring out the character of the locally listed building, while bringing it back to viable use for the future as a key community facility, supporting small businesses and businesses.

The planning request includes proposals such as the installation of new glazing on part of the east and north elevations, the filling of formal openings on the rear elevation and replacement windows and a new elevator enclosure and plant on the rear flat roof of the first floor.

The second Flexible Business Center will be operated by Tamworth Borough Council to complement the heavily used and over-subscribed Tamworth Enterprise Center at Philip Dix House in Corporation Street. Its 16 serviced offices are constantly busy, with a waiting list since it opened in 2017.

This development is separate from South Staffordshire College’s proposals to demolish much of the 1960s part of the building facing St Editha’s Square, to house new university space.
